FAQ about the DSLR Inserts

4/6/11 – UPDATE – How you order inserts has changed.  They are now available with specific height, depth & width choices only.

Without a doubt the new inserts have been a smash hit &  thanks again to everyone who has ordered.  They are an easy & functional way to create a camera bag without being super expensive.  Plus you can just pull them out whenever you want your bag back.   While working with potential customers, I have been asked a few questions repeatedly & thought it would be a good idea to get a few of the basics down here on the blog.

So here we go…

    • Can you make an insert ? x ? x ? ? The inserts can be made to almost any size (cost increases for larger inserts).  But, most importantly,  what has to be taken into account is will this size insert actually fit your gear once completed.  The most common request is for inserts with an exterior depth (front to back) of 4 to 4.5 inches.   Yes, this insert can be created, but you will be left with approx 3 to 3.5 inches of usable depth inside the insert (due to the foam padding).  Now for some this is perfect for storing lenses, flashes or maybe even a mini tripod, not so much for easy storage of your camera with a lens attached.  It can be done, but it would be fairly tight depending on the size of your dslr.  So I would highly recommend setting out what you want to carry and get an idea of how much space you need before bag or insert shopping.

    • I have an X-Brand camera.  What size insert do I need? I’m never sure how to answer this one, so my only response to this is the insert used in my Maia & Large Hobo bags will accommodate almost any dslr camera and additional gear.  It measures 12″ W (side to side) x 7″ H (top to bottom) x 6″ D (front to back).   Now will this fit in your bag?   If your bag measures at least the dimensions above, then yes it will.  If you already have a bag that you’d like to use, place the gear inside as you intend to carry it & if you still have about an inch or more on all sides you are good to go.  Measure the dimensions of the bag & that would be the size you need for your insert.

    • How high (tall) do I need my insert? This is really a personal preference.  In most cases, you probably only need about 7″ to 8″ inches of padded height to fit your gear, but if your bag is taller & you’d like it to be padded all the way up it’s possible.  Or measure your tallest piece of gear & request an insert about an 1″ to 1.5″ taller.  Please keep in mind there is additional cost for larger inserts.

  • Is the lens sleeve version deeper/wider than the adjustable divider version? No, but because of the padding in the sleeves and different configuration of interior setup the sides bow out more when sitting outside of a bag.   The actual measurements of the inserts shown in the listing photos are the same.

That about covers the most common questions (I think).  Have any more?  Please feel free to add your comment & I’ll be sure to answer.  It may even be added to the list.

Coming soon…inserts with top flaps…
