The zipper closure inserts are designed to keep all your camera gear locked up tight when not in use and for some of you it just gives you that piece of mind to know that if you toss something in your bag it won’t land right on your camera.  A customer recently purchased two inserts for the specific purpose of loading all his gear into an old swiss army rucksack.  If you wish to find out more info about any of the gear below, please visit his flickr photostream.

The custom zipper inserts gave him the ability to store all his gear in the exact bag he wanted.

The zipper inserts are only available with adjustable dividers because the zipper does limit access somewhat to the interior of the bag.  The lens sleeves would be difficult to easily access with the zipper closure.  An alternative to the zipper insert would be the flap closure inserts.   There are now flap closure inserts available in both the adjustable divider version and lens sleeve version of padded camera bag insert.
